✏️ Bandaid Solutions
They say time heals all wounds. Maybe it’s true: after a while, the intense emotions that can be so painful on the heart when remembering a past event or person seem to dull over time. But simply leaving wounds to heal with time is not the best treatment. Facing those feelings — sitting with them, analyzing them, experiencing them in their entirety — is the only way to truly close a chapter of life and move on. Running away from the pain never seems to do the trick. Eventually, you have to put the issue to bed.
I went through a period where I felt it necessary to reach out to people I’ve hurt, or people that have hurt me, even if they had long forgotten about it. Some of those conversations were tough for me, others not so much. But what it did was allow me to lay to rest the skeletons of the past, knowing I had done what I could. You can never go back in time to change what was said and what was done. All you have is today: a chance to make the most of a difficult situation.
Time heals all wounds, but with a bandaid solution. I think it is better to forget the bandaids and administer the cure: honest reflection, forgiveness, and compassion for others.
📸 Photo of the Week
I took this photo on 24 October 2019, whilst travelling solo in the UK.
People were always surprised when I told them I went/was going alone, but I loved it. I made fond memories, met fascinating people, and chose my own schedule. A companion is always nice, but it better be the right person.
📖 Book of the Week — The Scottish Nation, 1700-2007 by Tom Devine
This book examines the evolution of modern Scotland over the past 300 years from a social, political, religious, and economic perspective. Scotland has a fascinating story, and its union with Britain was neither seamless nor without opposition. I found this book at a used bookstore in downtown Hamilton, and it has been a great addition to my library.
💭 Quote of the Week
Spend your money on the things money can buy. Spend your time on the things money can’t buy.
Haruki Murakami
🔭 Sunday Best
The theme this week is 20th-century music! Here are some of my favourite tracks of late:
Pavane for a Dead Princess — by the French composer, pianist, and conductor Maurice Ravel (1875-1937)
Piano Concerto No. 2: II. Andante — by the Soviet composer and pianist Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975)
Everything Happens to Me — by the American Jazz trumpeter and vocalist Chet Baker (1929-1988)
💡 Food for Thought
There are 1001 new methods and strategies for success, but the secrets are in the past. The tried and tested way.
The boring method works.
