✏️ The Mission-Based Life
In health research, it is important to have a clearly defined mission when conducting a study. This mission guides your study design, ensuring your results answer the questions you’ve sought out to answer. The idea of having a mission is not only valuable in the research field but in our own lives as well.
Life is long and short at the same time. The days are long, but before you know it your hair is greying and getting out of bed isn’t as easy as it once was. As early as possible, you should start thinking about what you want out of life, in clear and explicit terms. Whether in the professional, personal, or spiritual sense, it is important to know what your end product looks like. Having a clear mission in every realm of life will shape your values, and in turn, your actions (if you are in alignment with your values) to move towards that mission.
Think deeply and honestly about what you want your life to look like in 1-, 5-, 10- and 20-years.
What are you doing? What type of people do you want around you? What do you want your daily life to look like?
Be willing and open to making detours along the way, but always strive to move towards your mission.
📸 Photo of the Week
I have started graduate school this month and it is a lot of work, learning, and fun.
📖 Book of the Week — Meditations by Marcus Aurelius
I may have recommended this book before and will probably recommend it again. It is one of the central texts of Stoicism and was my gateway drug into the world of philosophy. I have a hard copy as well as a digital copy on my phone and return to it frequently to mine its wisdom.
When you arise in the morning think of what a privilege it is to be alive, to think, to enjoy, to love ...
Marcus Aurelius
💭 Quote of the Week
The real things haven't changed. It is still best to be honest and truthful; to make the most of what we have; to be happy with simple pleasures; and have courage when things go wrong.
Laura Ingalls Wilder
🔭 Sunday Best
Italy’s Book Doctor — Pietro Livi is doing amazing work, restoring damaged ancient texts to their full glory.
A Market Economy in the Early Roman Empire — a white paper by Peter Temin.
Kawhi Leonard Sending the 76er’s Home — in style. Probably the most iconic moment in Toronto Raptors history.
💡 Food for Thought
Your thoughts take you places.
Be careful what you tell yourself because you will believe it.
