Welcome to the Time Capsule — a weekly newsletter that discusses the practicalities of life and explores the wisdom, ideas, and events of the past to help you build a better future.
There was an issue with last week’s newsletter resulting in it not being sent to the email list. My apologies. You can find it here.
💭 Quote of the Week
I strongly believe that the only way to encourage innovation is to give it to the young. The young have a great advantage in that they are ignorant. Because I think ignorance in science is very important. If you’re like me and you know too much you can’t try new things. I always work in fields of which I’m totally ignorant.

✏️ On Anxiety
Anxiety is a feeling that resides within all of us. It is powerful, and to a certain extent ever-present. It permeates our existence despite our attempts to run away from it. The pursuit of status and wealth, the taking of drugs and drinking of alcohol, are many of the ways we seek to escape the anxieties of existence. But to no avail.
Anxiety derives from the uncertainties of life and our deepest doubts about ourselves. It is often our own minds that we battle against, fighting wars that exist in our thought alone. When our techniques and systems against anxiety fail, the door to rumination and depression creaks open, and once that door is opened it is not so easily closed.
There is no escape from anxiety. Only honest confrontation. To deal with anxiety is to face it head-on, to face yourself, and to choose a life of action. When we choose a life of action, when we choose to believe in ourselves and take the leap of faith into the unknown, we do not defeat anxiety but move through it, in spite of it. That is the way to deal with anxiety.
