Greetings.

✏️ Thou Shall Not Lie
A man who lies to himself and listens to his own lie comes to a point where he does not discern the truth either in himself or anywhere around him, and thus falls into disrespect towards himself and others.
~ Fyodor Dostoevsky
Lying, I believe, is one of the most destructive sins that one can commit. It is so destructive because it is so easy to get away with, so difficult to refute, and therefore is a cheap solution to a problem. When I was a child I would lie — sometimes out of fear, sometimes out of self-interest — and I noticed the effect it had on myself and the people around me. When one becomes a known liar everything they say and do is taken with a grain of salt, and it is hard to believe that individual even when he is telling the truth. It took a deliberate choice in my later years to try to be a truthful, honest person, and take what comes with that.
I think part of growing up and being an 'adult' is taking full responsibility for the truth. It is infinitely more complex to go through life and maintain relationships with people that are based on falsehood and deceit. If you want to have healthy relationships with truthful people, you must fulfill your end of the bargain by becoming a truthful person yourself.
Anything is better than lies and deceit!
~ Leo Tolstoy

📖 Book of the Week — Churchill by Andrew Roberts
Written by one of my favourite biographers, this study into the life of Winston Churchill was a fascinating read which I brought with me on a pre-pandemic cruise boat. Outside of his critical role during the 2nd World War, there is much more to the man; he was involved in the ill-fated Gallipoli campaign in the 1st World War, was a war correspondent during the Boer War, and had a very vibrant and tumultuous personal life.
I am a big fan of famous speeches, and Mr. Churchill gave some of the most important and influential speeches in all of history. He was the man that was needed at such a dire hour.
